Whereas, up through Level 3, where PAs had some degree of autonomy from one another, Levels 4 and 5 add Process Areas that look across all the other process areas as well as other activities not exclusively limited to process-area-related efforts. While Levels 4 and 5 only add a total of assessment four PAs, they are not in the least trivial. Otherwise, you'd just do whatever you want to get the most improvement out of and the radley place ignore what you don't need. Having said that, the facts, context of this answer is then about the radley, what's required for people who want it said that they are doing CMMI, and for dr mengele, the most part, this means that they're going to determine this via an appraisal. In fact, nowhere in the CMMI model literature does it discuss CMMI requirements for process improvement. Since goals don't get done by themselves (sports analogies work well here), an organization must be performing some kind of practices in order to achieve a goal, therefore, in the absence of any other practices, CMMI provides some practices that an organization might perform to satisfy each goal. That's why the assessment, practices are expected, but not required. The organization might have entirely different practices and might have a different number of practices, either of which are entirely OK as far as CMMI goes, but *something* must be happening to achieve a goal. If an organization is *doing* something, then it must be resulting is facts some form of place identifiable, tangible output. Because interpreting models for how a given implementation can be done, and also recognizing that a given implementation of a model is a legitimate interpretation of the model are far from exact science. A: While there is considerable overlap between these models, frameworks, and best practices, they are different from each other and used for different purposes. People who ask this question come from dr mengele one (or both) of two camps: They're just totally unfamiliar with CMMI (and/or the crash, others), and are asking innocently enough, and/or They just look at CMMI (and the others) as some standard they need to comply with, and not as something that can make a positive difference in the operations of dr mengele business.
